Why I would share the Gospel with a Jehovah’s Witness

Sharing the Gospel with a Jehovah’s Witness may seem intimidating but typically you don’t have to go anywhere because they will come to your door.  You may know some of them through work or school.  God has called us to make disciples of all nations and to preach the Gospel boldly to the world around us, this includes Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The Witnesses live under very strict rules and are coming to your door because it is a part of their works that are required to get to Heaven. They believe that knocking on your door and telling you about Jehovah will help to earn their way. So please have compassion on them and don’t miss the opportunity to share the true Jesus with them because it may be the only time they will ever hear about Him.

Now, as we consider why we would share the Gospel with them, we will use Greg Gilbert’s 4 part definition of the Gospel to see how the JW’s distort and destroy the biblical Gospel.  In Greg Gilbert’s book What is the Gospel? he notes “Now that we have looked at Paul’s argument in Romans 1-4, we can see that at the heart of the proclamation of the gospel are the answers to four crucial questions:

  1. Who made us and to whom are we accountable?
  2. What is our problem?….
  3. What is God’s solution to the problem?….
  4. How do I – Myself, right here, right now – how do I come to be included in that salvation?….

In short, they are God, man, Christ, and man’s response.  The Jehovah’s Witness has had each one of these redefined by the Watchtower so they are no longer able to trust the definition of Christ given in the Scriptures.  The Jehovah’s Witnesses used the King James Version of the Bible until around 1950 at which time they created a new book called the New World Translation of the Bible that more suited their doctrinal errors.  It should be noted that no one on the translation committee had every had any training in Hebrew (one had done a little self study) and only one of them had done two years of study in Greek.  This was demonstrated in 1955 Court of Session, Scotland.

They reject the plain teaching of the Bible regarding God and the doctrine of the Trinity. The Bible teaches that there is one God and three persons in the Godhead. As James White says “one What and three Who’s.” One God, three persons.  They rejected the doctrine of the Trinity early on which you can see the claim in 1882 here on page 369 of the Watchtower Archives.  Even while they decry the doctrine of the Trinity and claim Christians have created this heresy it is easy to show that their belief about Christ is in accord with the Arian Heresy of the fourth century.

The JWs deny that Christ is God but claim rather that He is Michael the Archangel. You can see this claim here by going to the book The Truth Shall Make You Free and scrolling down to page 49.  This doctrine destroys who God is.  It destroys the doctrine of John 1:1 which says that the Word was in the beginning with God.  In the Greek this says that the Word was face to face with Theos (God).  Christ as the second member of the Trinity has always existed with the Father and the Holy Spirit as one God.  The Jehovah’s Witnesses have destroyed two major points of the Gospel so far as they proclaim a different God and a different Jesus.

What about Salvation? Christ declared in John 8:23-24 “…You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.  Therefore if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” Paul declares in Romans 10:9-12 “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”  However according to the Watchtower, the doctrine of salvation requires work on the part of mankind. By going to the 1952 edition of Let God Be True and going to page 74 you can see that the Watchtower claims that Christ was not immortal until He faithfully lived on the earth and then they say that immortality is a reward for faithfulness.  But we just saw in John and Romans that we must put our faith and trust in Christ to be saved.  Ephesians 2:8-9 points out that it is not by works of righteousness that we have done but according to His mercy that He saves us!  Again in the same book on pages 120-121 they reiterate that “in order for men to be saved form death due to being stung by sin they must inform themselves of God’s mercy through Christ Jesus and then have faith in the provision He has made. This faith means to rely on such provision confidently, to give God all credit for it, and then to demonstrate this conviction by devoting oneself to God and by informing others of this ransom.”

They have the wrong Bible, the wrong Jesus and the wrong means of salvation. The Watchtower has made slaves out of the average JW today.  Those who come to your door are from what is called the Jonadab Class.  They are the lowest of the classes within the church and they are working their way to Heaven.  They need to hear about the true Jesus Christ, the second member of the Godhead who came 2,000 years ago to die on the cross for our sins.  He rose from the grave showing His power overs sin and death and verifying that everything that He said was true.
